Award Project Reveal: Piper Glen Kitchen

Summary

As with most kitchens, this definitely identifies as the hub of these clients' home. Both husband and wife work from home, which means that at least one person in their family is usually using and/or working in the kitchen at any given time. Their desire to increase both the efficiency and functionality within the space was crucial. We increased counter seating, maximized storage space, and improved storage solutions using clever space saving cabinet fixtures.

Project Goals

The goal of this project was to upgrade the design of this kitchen away from the builder grade oak cabinets, into an open and light customized kitchen. To them, the space wasn't functional, efficient, or family friendly. They couldn't replace the floors (as they ran throughout the entire 1500 square feet of the first floor), and needed colors that would blend with this existing feature. They needed better solutions for trash storage, microwave placement, and easily accessible cabinet space. Additionally, as coffee aficionados, they wanted to be able to have a dedicated coffee bar that could be closed up when not in use. The existing island offered no counter seating, and the inability for the kids to not be able to eat breakfast or do homework in that location was a constant frustration to them. Their appreciation for contrasts in both color and textures drove the design.

Kitchen Island and Cabinetry

We started by taking the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling for a custom look. The lighted upper cabinets, along with the white color of the perimeter cabinets worked together to lighten the space. For high contrast, we chose a transparent, black finish for the island and the hood, along with a split-face ledger stone (sealed within an inch of its life!) for the full backsplash. We squared off one side of the island to create two spaces for the much-needed counter stools. A favorite feature was the enclosed section for the new coffee bar. This, along with the deep drawers of the base cabinets for easy access, a pullout trash bin, and a drawer microwave are their favorite additions. The custom table and built-in bench seating in the nook rounded out the inviting family space, and solidified the functional, family space that the clients were looking for.
