6 Must-Have Features for a Truly Tranquil & Functional Primary Bedroom

After a long day of juggling work, kids, errands, and traffic, there is no better place in our home to escape than our primary bedrooms. When we were kids, the phrase "go to your room" meant all things negative. Now, I wish someone would tell me, "That's it! Stop what you are doing and spend the rest of the day in your room by yourself." If only life were that simple again.

While we don’t spend most of our day in the comfort of our bedrooms, it's important to spend what little time we have there in peace and comfort. Here is my list of 6 must-have details for a functional and tranquil primary bedroom…

1. Simple & Tranquil Lines

The bedroom is not generally where we opt for layer upon layer of details that energize the space. Instead, choose the simplicity of color, lines, and accents for a restful effect.

2. Soothing Colors & Patterns

At the end of the day, we are not looking to be overwhelmed by loud colors and patterns while we are trying to wind down. For example, a bright orange wall can be unique, but generally not while we are trying to fall asleep. Instead, use color sparingly with simpler items to create a restful vibe. We recommend using softer hues and muted tones with splashes of color.

3. Intentional Light Sources

Just as in every other room in our home, we need a combination of light sources in our bedrooms. This includes a combination of overall lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting.  Overall lighting can be natural light during the day, but in the evenings, it would require a source such as canned lights.

Task lighting is necessary on nightstands or on the walls, flanking the bed, and near any additional seating areas. Task lighting provides a healthy amount of light for reading, sewing, or TV viewing. Accent lighting is excellent for illuminating art, plants, or small areas of interest within the room.

4. Invest in Luxurious Bedding

No matter what state your bedroom is in, do yourself the biggest favor possible and invest in luxurious bedding. This does not mean you have to purchase the most expensive bedding out there, but certainly make sure you sleep on high-quality, comfortable sheets and pillows.  Personally, I love a crisp, 100% cotton sheet, while others love flannel sheets. Whatever is the most comfortable for you, make sure you add it to your must-have checklist. Nothing is worse than a poor night's sleep due to being too hot, cold, or scratchy.

Likewise, don't overlook the importance of your bed cover. Down? Poly? What will make you most comfortable when trying to get a good night's sleep? Poor quality comforters, which generally contain inexpensive fills and use cheap fabrics, are uncomfortable to sleep on and don't last—which will require regular replacement and wasted money. Save yourself time and money (and wasted nights of fitful sleep) and start from the beginning with luxurious bedding.

5. Comfortable & Quiet Seating

Not everyone has room for a secondary seating area, but when there is, be sure to use it well. A single, comfortable chair placed near a window or a great lamp can create one of the most relaxing and serene spots in the house.

The key here is that seating in the bedroom is (conveniently) not in the public areas of our home. It's literally "your" chair. Not for public consumption. It's the perfect "leave me alone" or "I just need a moment's peace" space. The noise and chaos of the outside areas don't exist here in our own little retreat.

6. Visual Warmth with Window Treatments

If you want to create a tranquil and cozy bedroom, do not overlook the importance of window treatments. They add so much visual comfort and warmth to a space.  Think softness, coziness, and comfort—the feeling that even simple drapery panels can bring to the room. Window treatments don't need to be heavy or even functional to complete the tranquil feeling. This seemingly small detail can completely transform the space and provide a finished look.
