Award Project Reveal: Orchard Road Laundry Room

Summary

We set out to create a clean & calming space for these client's new laundry room. As laundry rooms tend to be chaotic spaces due to their function, we found that designing with simple details surrounded by a calming color served to create this ideal space.

Project Goals

The space for the laundry room started out as a large, catch-all of a utility room. While it was a somewhat large space, it didn't serve any real function. There was no storage, too much floor space, and what they really needed was a functional laundry room, and if possible, a guest bath.
Our goal was to provide both of those spaces for the clients, and in this submission, we are reviewing the details of the fabulous laundry room. The clients requested clothing drying racks, a sink, counter space, hampers, and cabinet storage for utility items such as brooms, etc.

Accents and Cabinetry

We determined the best location for the dividing wall between the areas and solved for the ideal location for a doorway into the new laundry room. We were also able to stack the W/D which allowed for additional cabinet space and counter area. For the storage needs, we designed the "drawers" to the right of the sink to be pull-out drying racks. The hampers are located to the right of the W/D for ease of access, and the tall cabinet opposite the W/D is for the utility items. We included pullout cabinets flanking the sink for detergent, cleaning products, and sponges.

The rich blue of the cabinetry was selected as an inviting color (if one HAS to do laundry, one might as well be happy in the space), which played beautifully off of the warm tones in the new wood flooring. Our simple gold fixtures work beautifully against our small hex, full height backsplash. Everything was set off by the simple black and gold pendant over the sink. As laundry rooms tend to be chaotic spaces due to their function, we found that designing a space with simple details surrounded by a calming color served to create this ideal space.
